On Campus Resources

For your convenience, we compiled transgender-specific resources and listed them on a separate page.  Please note that the resources listed below are transgender-inclusive but not transgender-specific.

Ambassadors of the Pride Center
The Ambassador program is a student leadership program designed to provide students with opportunities to learn about and apply leadership skills, refine their understanding of and communication of GLBT issues, and advocate for greater GLBT inclusion and equity on campus. They are available to meet with students who have suggestions for the Pride Center, personal concerns, questions about GLBT-related issues, or just would like to talk. Feel free to contact them.

AWARE
AWARE is a student run organization for GLBT students and their allies. They meet Thursdays at 7pm. Contact AWARE@bridgew.edu for details.

Career Services
Career Services has a list of GLBT-related career resources on their web page.

Counseling and Health Services
Counseling and Health Services provide safe and affirming care to ALL their patients and are committed to excellent care for GLBT students. Check out these 10 things that GLBT people should discuss with their health care providers.

Note about hormones and surgery for transgender students: Hormone prescriptions are available through Health Services and are covered by student insurance. Sex reassignment surgery is not covered under the student health insurance plan.

Note about HIV testing: HIV testing is confidential, meaning that you provide your name but the results of your test may not be given to a third party except when legally mandated.  HIV testing can also be done anonymously, meaning that you don't give your name or any identifying information about you. Some anonymous testing allows you to identify yourself with a number or pseudonym of your choosing or randomly assigned to you. BSU Health Services will provide anonymous HIV testing to students but you must specifically request it.  Once you make the request, you must pay for the cost of the test with cash. The specimen is submitted to the lab with the number assigned to you and when the results come in, the practitioner gives all copies of the test results to you, thereby leaving no paper trail.

Barney Frank Equality Scholarship
The Barney Frank Equality Scholarship is for students with financial need who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender as well as for allies with financial need who have advocated for the GLBT community. Preference is given to students who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender and who have lost financial assistance from their parents upon disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity.

GLBTA Alumni Connection

The Office of Residence Life and Housing
The Office of Residence Life and Housing seeks to provide housing that is comfortable and conducive to learning for each individual student.  Efforts are directed towards establishing a community where there is an appreciation of diversity and a respect for individual rights.  There is a process in place for students to request special accommodations based on medical or psychological needs.  The senior director of Health and Counseling works with each request individually to plan a housing accommodation that will best meet the student's specific needs.  This may include a single room with a private bath, selected roommates or certain areas on campus.  Sophomores, juniors and seniors may also select to live in designated mixed gender (co-ed) suites or apartments with shared bathrooms. For details, please contact the Office of Residence Life and Housing, or contact the GLBT Coordinator, Lisa Forest, of the GLBTA Pride Center.

If you are a commuter, check out this GLBT roommate-finder resource: Pride Roommates

The Registrar's Office
The Registrar's Office will update student records for students or alumni who request a name change due to a gender transition (proper documentation required). Please see Lisa Forest of the GLBTA Pride Center, or Irene Checkovich, the Registrar, for more information.

Safe Zone Allies
Safe Zone allies are members of the BSC community who have undergone a training workshop on how to best support GLBT students. They have pledged to provide unbiased support and a listening ear when needed.
