The focus of Project Compass at each
of the four grantee institutions is somewhat different. At BSU, Project Compass
resources are being targeted at improving academic success, retention, and
graduation rates for students of color, low-income students, and students who
are the first in their families to attend college (i.e., first-generation
college students).
Committed and enthusiastic members of academic and student affairs have come
together in a
Community of Practice (COP) to oversee Project Compass efforts at the
university. Three working groups of COP members have been convened to lead efforts
in the four main Project Compass areas of focus at BSU:
student programming,
faculty development,
research, and diversity and inclusion. Project Compass has encouraged the
development of unique programming that will support
underserved students, and, as the
initiative is scaled up, the entire BSU student population.
Bridgewater's successful use of Project Compass has hinged upon the willingness
of faculty, staff, and administration to work together in ingenious ways and,
most of all, a deeply held belief that our purpose as an institution is to
provide all students with access to the possibility for excellence.
More information regarding Project Compass can be found at BSU Project Compass. For additional questions, please contact Dr. Sabrina Gentlewarrior, Director of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Primary Investigator for Project Compass.
