Nearly 200 freshmen who made BSC's Dean's List last semester were honored Wednesday at the Freshman Dean's List Recognition Ceremony held at the Campus Center auditorium.

President Dana Mohler-Faria personally conveyed honorary citations to the freshmen, while more than 300 family, friends and members of the campus community looked on.

Dr. Michael D. Young, acting associate provost for Academic Planning and Administration, welcomed the crowd and praised the freshmen for starting their college careers off with such great success.

"Congratulations on a journey well begun," he said.

President Mohler-Faria invoked the same metaphor, when he told the students they may face challenges at BSC, but their dedication to academic achievement has readied them for the college experience.

"You are prepared for this journey," he said.

Student speaker was senior Brianne McDonough, an earth science major, who stressed the importance of students choosing good grades and face-to-face interaction over spending too much time on social networking sites.

"You have a personal future, not a virtual future," she said.

BSC deans and administrators who introduced the students were: Dr. Heather Smith, associate vice president for enrollment services; Dr. Rita Miller, acting dean, School of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Brenda Molife, acting dean, School of Business; Dr. Anna Bradfield, dean, School of Education and Allied Studies; and Dr. Peggy Smith, director of the Academic Achievement Center.

Students honored represented the three undergraduate schools - arts and sciences, business, and education and allied studies, as well as undeclared majors. The event was sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs. (Story and photos by Rob Matheson, Institutional Communications)
