CART Changes its Name to CARS
At the November 2011 CART Advisory Board Meeting members voted to change the name of CART to CARS, the Center for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship. A change in the mission statement and a series of discussions preceded this vote.
At the February 2011 CART Retreat, Advisory Board members reviewed and voted to modify CARTs mission statement. The modifications to CARTs mission more clearly reflect CARTs goals: a focus on support of faculty/librarian research, scholarship, and creative endeavors. The CART Advisory Board vote changed the mission statement from:
The mission of the Center for Advancement of Research and Teaching (CART) is to foster the development of scholarship and teaching for faculty and librarians. CART promotes individual, collaborative, and interdisciplinary scholarly and teaching activities and strives to create knowledge that contributes to our local and world communities.
to
The mission of CART, organized and led by faculty, librarians, and staff, is to foster the development of research, scholarship, and creative endeavors for faculty and librarians. CART promotes individual, collaborative, and interdisciplinary scholarship activities, and provides resources for the creation of knowledge that reflects and supports the strategic goals of the institution, when appropriate.
Adoption of the new mission statement also distinguished CART from the Office of Teaching and Learning, the university center that promotes excellence in teaching. To accurately reflect the accepted mission statement, the Advisory Board created a list of potential new names for CART. The list was circulated and discussed at the October 2011 meeting. At the November 2011 board meeting a vote by ballot indicated the majority preferred renaming CART to CARS, the Center for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship.
While the name has changed, CARS will continue to provide opportunities for the development and growth of faculty/librarian research, scholarship, and creative endeavors and CARS will continue collaborative work with the OTL, especially on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Grant support from CARS for faculty/librarian research remains unchanged, and explanations of the kinds of grant support offered by both CARS and OTL can be found under each offices website.
